Initial Pour
Your concrete starts as a pliable liquid, shaping the slab’s surface. It could be around 40% water at this point, obviously too wet for flooring and not worth moisture testing.
Commencement of Hardening
Concrete exhibits hydrophobic properties, causing water to rise to the surface. Within 24 to 48 hours, the forms can be removed, and the concrete becomes sturdy enough for cautious foot traffic. Still, it’s much too wet to apply flooring or perform a moisture test.
Light Traffic Phase
A week into the curing process, light foot traffic can access the slab. However, the concrete remains excessively moist for immediate flooring installation, meaning moisture testing would give you results of high evaporation rates.
Capillary Formation
Small voids known as capillaries emerge, acting as microscopic channels for water expulsion from the concrete. These capillaries significantly impact the long-term quality of your slab. The water escaping through these capillaries are what we read in our moisture tests.
Complete Curing
Typically, concrete is considered cured after 28 days. Nevertheless, it may still retain high moisture content and remain unsuitable for immediate flooring installation. At this point, you can take a moisture content reading and you may be ready for flooring.
