Concrete Slab Curing Process
Slab Placement
Your concrete is poured as a soft, liquid to form the surface.
Initial Hardening
Concrete is hydrophobic, meaning it doesn’t like water. This pushes the water out of the slab to the surface. 24 to 48 hours after pouring, forms can be removed and the concrete is hard enough to walk on carefully.
Light Traffic
After one week of curing, light traffic can traverse your slab. But the concrete will be much too wet for flooring installation, and moisture testing would not be worth the effort.
Forming Capillaries
At this point, small holes are formed where water escapes out of the concrete. The microscopic tunnels are capillaries and play a critical role in your slab’s lifespan.
Full Curing
After 28 days, most concrete is cured, though it still could have high moisture content and might not be ready for flooring.
Ready for Moisture Testing
CCMT usually performs moisture testing no sooner than 28 days after slab placement. Our tests still might show that your concrete needs more curing time, especially for thicker slabs.
